QUICK START FOR E-MAIL OVER HAM RADIO

You do not need a TNC or radio to get the required software loaded and configured. You will establish an e-mail account @ winlink.org and be ready to add the TNC/radio at a later date. You will be able to participate in the June 4, 2008 Hurricane Exercise w/o a TNC/radio and not even need to be at home if you can't be present during the exercise!

What do you have to loose?

What you will need is a computer (desk or laptop) running Win2000, WinXP, or Vista that is on the Internet during loading/configuring these programs AND during the exercise if you elect to participate and do not have a TNC/Radio set up.

If you have never configured any of these programs before and have never had an e-mail account @winlink.org, go now to the START HERE section below.

FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SOME OF THESE PROGRAMS ALREADY

AND/OR HAVE AN E-MAIL ACCOUNT AT WINLINK.ORG

1. If you have previously had an e-mail account @winlink.org but do not remember your Base Call Password, send an e-mail to budt@cfl.rr.com and ask me to help you. (This will not be answered until after May 15, 2008 since I'm out of town!) What I will do is DELETE your @winlink.org account from the WL2K directory – and you will set in a new password through these exercise below. (This is the easiest way to go!)

2. If you have previously configured Winpack, or AGW PE, on this computer and know they work, you do not have to download and install them again. So make a note you can skip those parts of Assignments #2 #3, and #6PMP.

3. If you have Paclink AGW working it is recommended you complete these exercises and install Paclink MP – it is a better product and Paclink AGW is no longer supported. Do not have Paclink POST OFFICE running when Paclink MP is running.

Be sure to include your ham call letters in the comments section when given the opportunity.

We refer to this as the WL2K for Dummies Group!

Once you get in to the WL2K for Dummies Group – look on the left pane and click on Files.

Then go to the NEW E-MAIL ASSIGNMENTS folder.

There you will find several assignments titled “NEWE-Mail Assignment#1, #2, #3 etc.

NOTICE

Here in East Central Florida (and elsewhere!) we will not use the Airmail program for packet, but will use the new Paclink MP client program.

It is not necessary for you to do any assignments that are Airmail-specific (i.e. NEWE-MAIL Assignment #4Airmail, NEWE-MAIL Assignment #6Airmail) or any Airmail part of other assignments.

Start with NEWE-Mail Assignment #1, then do #2, then then #3. (Do not download Airmail in Assignment #2.)

Then do NEWE-Mail Assignment #4PMP.

Then if you do not have a TNC go to FINISH HERE below.
